Calgary's not-for-profit sector is finding the current economic times extremely challenging – both financially and through sustainable volunteer support. Not only are their sources of funding drying up, but demand for the crucial services provided by these organizations is increasing dramatically. In short, they are being asked to do much more with much less.
For that reason, BD&P is advising clients and friends that we are increasing our support for a Stampede-themed fund and food raising campaign titled "PUT THE BOOTS TO HUNGER". PUT THE BOOTS TO HUNGER is a campaign partnership between BD&P and the Calgary Food Bank that will see BD&P commit $150,000 to launch and promote the initiative during Stampede week, 2009.
Community partners joined BD&P in 2008 and saw 17 corporations and community groups host events in support of PUT THE BOOTS TO HUNGER raising a total of $21,500 in funds and nearly 7300 lbs of food. Additionally, BD&P's 2008 Stampede party raised approximately $15,000 in donations from guests in response to the initial pledge of $80,000. The overall goal of the PUT THE BOOTS TO HUNGER campaign in 2009 is to raise at least $500,000.
If the demand for the Calgary Food Bank’s services continues as it did during the fall of 2008 and in early 2009, the Food Bank will experience its largest need for emergency food hampers in nearly 10 years. The majority of people relying on the Food Bank for emergency food hampers continue to be the working poor. It is our goal to provide the Calgary Food Bank with the resources it needs to ensure that all Calgarians who need to rely on the Calgary Food Bank, can do so.
Please join us in making a donation to the Calgary Food Bank during the PUT THE BOOTS TO HUNGER campaign and help raise awareness and funds for a critical organization upon which far too many Calgarians have to rely. (Donations can be made online or by sending a cheque to the Food Bank or to BD&P. Please make cheques payable to the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank, noting our Put the Boots to Hunger campaign.)
